The Cold Detachment of the Familiar (2014)

My work focuses on diaspora, capturing slow movements, in our fast-paced, ever changing globalised world. With our current transnational communities, multidimensional concepts such as home, identity and belonging are redefined to accompany multiple belongings.

This work focused on the lack of belonging. It explores, in the text and publication, the eerie detachment that takes place when one returns home after idolising it through memory. When the familiar loses its warms and comfort.

Memory Politics (2014)

Fond memories change throughout the years.

New ones are added.

Tragedy strikes. That memory is frozen.

These photographs were taken in my grandparents home, where I sent the majority of my childhood in South Africa, up until I left to move to the Netherlands in 2007.  The start of my practice being centred around memory and South Africa. This has led to creating archives, a variety of research, and numerous works.
